VIRGINIA (WDBJ) – Students across Virginia will learn about all the boots farmers wear during Agriculture Literacy Week, March 23-27
Volunteers will visit elementary schools to read Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom’s Book of the Year, “Farm Boots.”
“Agriculture Literacy Week is, without a doubt, our largest volunteer outreach event,” said Lynn Black, director of education for Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom. “During this week, there will be over 1,500 volunteers reading to around 70,000 children all across the state.”
Black said the organization selects a book each year that will engage students while teaching them about agriculture’s role in daily life.
“Farm Boots” focuses on different seasons, farm activities and attire worn for various occasions on the farm.
“What I love so much about it, is that it really highlights so many different types of agriculture and really introduces kids to the many variety of farms that we find and the ways that these farms help put the food on the table and the clothes on their backs,” Black said.
Reese Lane, a member of the Lord Botetourt FFA, will participate in the event for the first time.
“It’s a good book for children about teaching them about the different seasons, different things that happen on the farm, and different types of attire you wear for different occasions,” Lane said.
Lilah Barker, president of the Lord Botetourt FFA, said the experience allows students to share their passion for agriculture.
“It’s always so fun getting to see all the little kids and teach them something about something I care about a lot,” Barker said. “And they always seem so captivated whenever we talk to them.”
