The Boston Red Sox know it won’t be easy for them replace Alex Bregman this offseason when he departs for free agency.
One thing for certain is the team needs to have a plan after trading away Rafael Devers knowing this could have happened. This doesn’t even include Trevor Story, who also may choose to opt out. If he does, the Red Sox will be retooling the left side of their infield this winter.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report believes Boston should pursue Mauricio Dubón from the Houston Astros.
“Alex Bregman has already exercised his opt-out while Trevor Story’s decision is still pending,” Reuter wrote Saturday. “Even if Story returns, though, Boston’s 2026 infield is looking a bit over-dependent on the likes of Kristian Campbell, Triston Casas and Marcelo Mayer returning from injury/ineffectiveness in 2025. Adding an ‘anywhere’ infielder should be in the plans. Meanwhile, Houston has arguably too many infielders now that Carlos Correa is back in the fold, so getting Dubón could be the way for Boston to go.”
This past season, Dubón slashed .241/.289/.355 for the Astros with just seven home runs and 33 RBI. It marked the fifth straight year where his OPS+ was below 100 in the major leagues. However, he has kept his on-base percentage at or around .300 for the last three seasons which is how he maintains a roster spot.
Dubón wouldn’t be the only solution for the Red Sox, but he would be someone who could help fill the gaps left by Bregman and possibly Story. As long as Boston wouldn’t have to concede too much to acquire him, Dubón wouldn’t be a bad addition by any means.
