Yampa Valley Community Agriculture Alliance and LiftUp of Routt County are partnering to launch a program to aid local producers and residents, who are both struggling amid rising costs and funding cuts.
Through the Local Food for Local People program, CAA will purchase food directly from farmers in the Yampa Valley, which are then distributed through LiftUp’s food bank.
“Local producers are essential to the health of our community, not just culturally and economically but in providing nutritious food that’s grown and raised right here,” said CAA Executive Director Amber Pougiales, in a news release. “This program brings together donors, producers, and community partners to support a food system that serves everyone.”
Food insecurity is growing in the state, according to CAA officials. LiftUp reported that 1 in 7 Routt County families rely on the food pantry for 50-75% of their food. In past years, LiftUp received more than $40,000 annually in state funds to purchase local produce. This year it received $5,000.
Funds are raised through donations. For those wishing to donate, go to LiftUp’s website. CAA and LiftUp are also hosting a kickoff happy hour on Nov. 13 from 5-6 p.m. at Yampa Valley Foods, 35 11th St in Steamboat Springs.
“We are so grateful to partner with the CAA to provide local food for our food bank,” said LiftUp Executive Director Sue Fegelein.
“The dramatic cut to state funding will deprive our shoppers of delicious local meat and produce, and our local producers of important income. Local Food for Local People funds will fill that gap, providing desired foods for our neighbors and helping ensure that our local producers thrive,” added Fegelein.
