Borderlands board game boasts of badass boss battles

Gearbox Software’s Borderlands series is a space western first-person shooter, where players merrily blast their way across the planet Pandora in search of vaults of alien tech. It has made the leap from screen to tabletop once before, back in 2023, with the release of Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery. Now, another Borderlands board game is on the horizon, as Mister Torgue gets ready to open his arena once again.

The crowdfunding campaign for Mister Torgue’s Arena of Badassery 2 went live on November 4th. It bypassed it’s crowdfunding target of $50,000 (£38,000) after just 16 minutes and 15 seconds. While there are plenty of tactical miniatures games out there, the Borderlands license clearly set this one apart from the pack.

This new battle arena experience functions as a stand-alone expansion to its predecessor. It features the same looty-shooty gameplay where players navigate their Vault Hunters around a grid-based map. Combat is decided by rolling D4s, D10s, and D20s to determine whether you’re able to fill your enemies with bullets, or whether they end up blowing you apart instead.

The lowest pledge level of the campaign is the $85 (£64.50) “Invincible Arena” tier. This provides players with the new base game. Invincible Arena swaps out the bandit hordes and the corporate death squads of the first game for a small selection of gigantic plastic raid bosses. The highest pledge level, the $650 (£493) “Badass Completionists” tier includes the new game, the original Arena of Badassery, several campaign expansions, an add on that implements player vs player “Skirmish battles”, and a storage solution shaped like a Loot Chest from the Borderlands series.

If you lived in the Borderlands universe, would you cruise the stars in search of vaults, or stay the hell away from all of the malevolent mega corporations and nightmarishly murderous alien life? Let us know in the Wargamer Discord.
