BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – In July of last year, Delta acquired Entergy’s natural gas utilities in East Baton Rouge Parish. This prompted new billing rates. Delta Utilities and Entergy leaders are hoping to have many of the misconceptions cleared up regarding the recent increase in gas bills that many are seeing.
On the agenda tonight, you can expect an overview of recent billing changes and clarification about rates. The experts will break down who’s likely paying more and why. And with that being said, they will also offer recommendations for paying customers.
Utility providers will explain how you can best compare your Entergy and utility bills and let you know where to find payment options you may be eligible for.
Going into this meeting, Delta Utilities is highlighting an uptick in gas usage due to winter weather. Experts say a 41 percent colder winter this year compared to last year has led to a 145 percent surge in gas consumption. Those factors have played a vital role in the reason behind the increase in many folks’ Delta Utility bills. Couple that with the sale of Entergy’s natural gas distribution to Delta Utilities last year, and much of this dilemma may start to make more sense – a more expensive winter gas bill to heat your home up, while your electric usage, or cooling, tends to decrease.
The public service commissioner of District Two did his own legwork on this matter – so much so that 2024 Delta Utilities data was requested to compare with data from last year. Because it was a much colder winter in 2025, Commissioner Jean-Paul Coussan was able to quote, “Couple that with the price of natural gas increasing from last year, which is a direct pass-through to customers, many customers are seeing higher bills due to more usage.”
To further that point, temperatures dropped 32% from September to December 2025 compared to the same months in 2024. Still, if there are gaps that need to be filled and questions that need to be answered, the public is encouraged to attend tonight’s meeting.
