Natural gas pipeline explodes in Cameron Parish; one person injured | State

CAMERON PARISH, La. (NEWS 15) — A natural gas pipeline explosion near Holly Beach and Johnson Bayou in Cameron Parish left one person injured and sent emergency crews rushing to the scene, according to KPLC in Lake Charles.

The Cameron Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness reported that the Deflin LNG pipeline was still burning. Hazmat crews are on the scene.

Officials noted that one operator sustained minor injuries during the explosion.

Johnson Bayou High School, located about six miles from the explosion, was placed under a precautionary shelter-in-place. However, officials assured that there are no off-site impacts from the explosion.

The explosion occurred at the beach south of a compressor station. The 28-mile pipeline connects to an offshore rig where natural gas has been cut off, allowing the fire to burn out.

Troopers with Louisiana State Police will investigate the cause of the explosion.
