Homer, NE agriculture class debuts with district-wide hands-on event

HOMER, Neb. (KTIV) – It’s National Agriculture Week, and groups across the country are showcasing all things farming when it comes to food, fiber, and fuel.

Students in Homer, Nebraska, had the opportunity to see how their classmates who grew up farming or around farms use their skills by spending the day with the whole school at the first “Ag Comes to School Day.”

The agriculture class at Homer didn’t exist before this year.

Eight students signed up for “Intro To Ag” in its first year. As part of the class, students shared their knowledge with classmates during Ag Comes to School Day for National Ag Week.

Jakob Jerabek is in his first year as the new Ag Teacher. He said the event was designed to showcase what students have been learning.

“So this school district has never had ag. They’ve had a shop for several years, but they’ve never had ag-based classes or animals and plants classes. So this is something brand new to the district,” he said.

Students rotated between animal stations, getting hands-on experience with livestock.

Alexis Jessen, a student in the class, said agriculture is her whole world.

“I think it was important because not a lot of people around here get involved with agriculture-related things, and there’s a lot of ag around Nebraska,” Jessen said.

“We wanted to show off what we’ve been learning in class, show off what some of the great things that these students do at home anyway, and figured what better way than to show off to the rest of the school,” Jerabek added.

Homer has a mix of local students and students who open-enroll. The event was a first for some students to be up close with the animals.

“It’s important to me because it’s what I grew up with. It’s what I’ve lived with. It’s pretty much my life,” Jessen said. “I think it was nice to have this day where everybody gets to come out and see what agriculture is like and the different things you can do with it.”
