NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) are now accepting orders for conservation tree seedlings for spring planting. Early orders ensure access to preferred species and contribute to environmental conservation. Since 1972, NRDs have collaborated with landowners to plant over 102 million trees across the state. Seedlings are priced at approximately $1.20 each, with cost-share programs available in many districts. These trees provide numerous benefits, including reducing soil erosion, protecting crops and livestock, and supporting wildlife.
“The NRD Conservation Tree Program is about more than just trees—it’s about protecting our natural resources like soil, water, and wildlife,” said Martin Graff, president of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts. He emphasized that each seedling helps prevent soil erosion, shields crops and livestock, and filters water.
NRD foresters advise landowners to consider rehabilitating old windbreaks or planning new plantings as windbreaks mature. The program offers an affordable way for landowners to protect their property, with NRD staff assisting in species selection, planting plans, and even planting.
A significant partnership began in December 2021 when Lincoln-based Executive Travel launched its ETGreen campaign, pledging to plant 1 million trees with Nebraska’s NRDs. The campaign funded nearly 207,000 trees between 2022 and 2025, with an additional $50,000 committed for 2026. This collaboration offsets seedling costs for landowners and supports Executive Travel’s long-term tree planting goals.
NRD tree programs provide services such as planting assistance, weed barrier installation, and drip irrigation. Popular species sell out quickly, so early orders are encouraged. For more information on cost-share options or to place an order, contact your local NRD or visit www.nrdnet.org.
