Trump Gifted Gold Crown in South Korea, Days After ‘No Kings’ Protests Across U.S.
President Donald Trump was presented with an ornate golden crown and South Korea’s highest national honor on Wednesday, just days after “No Kings” protests erupted across U.S. cities.
During a ceremony in the city of Gyeongju, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung awarded Trump the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, typically reserved for heads of state, citing his “work trying to achieve peace on the Korean peninsula.” Trump is the first American ever to receive the distinction.
The gifts included an ornate medal and a replica of a Silla-era crown described as the “largest and most extravagant” among the six remaining from Korea’s first unified kingdom. The honor, the announcer said, was given “in anticipation of the peace and prosperity” he will bring to the region.
Inspecting the medal, Trump said: “That is really beautiful. I’d like to wear it right now. Thank you so much. We’ll cherish it. Thank you very much everybody.”
The pageantry underscored South Korea’s red-carpet welcome for Trump at the APEC summit, complete with military sabres, a drum ceremony, and a performance of the Village People’s “YMCA” by the South Korean Air Force Band.
Lee, who assumed office in June after his predecessor was removed from power, said the gesture symbolized a “golden age” of U.S.-South Korean relations.
Trump praised the honor as “very special,” but stopped short of donning the crown.
The spectacle arrives amid Trump’s international tour through Asia, which has already seen Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi gift him a golden golf ball and a signed putter belonging to the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom the president was close.
