Natural Resources Research
Faculty, undergraduates and graduate students in the College of Forest Resources and
Environmental Science are involved in hands-on, interdisciplinary research. Our research
spans the continents, from our base in a diverse Lake Superior environment to biofuel
exploration encompassing six countries, three languages, 36 organizations, and more
than 100 researchers.
Faculty researchers in natural resources, applied ecology, and environmental science at Michigan Tech work to better understand forest, rural, and urban networks within
the human context for management and decision-making. We’ve uncovered the impact of climate change on bird populations in pristine rainforests and explored six decades of fluctuating wolf and moose populations.
Students can get paid to conduct research through our earn-and-learn assistantships. Undergraduates can also spend their summer conducting research under faculty guidance

Our students live and breathe what they learn as they explore 5,866 acres of University-owned forestland. Manage timber harvests, protect streambeds and banks, and more in our conservation-oriented
Forestry and Environmental Resource Management program. Advance scientific knowledge of social-ecological systems through our Ecosystem Science Center. Work across disciplines to develop technology and better understand natural and
