BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) — The Chenango Forks Central School District held its fourth annual Agriculture Day on Wednesday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., located near the middle school’s bus loop area.
The event was organized by the districts middle and high school agriculture students and was under the guidance of science and agriculture teacher and Future Farmers of America advisor, Nichole Hantsch.
“I love that it is completely student led. It gives the kids so many different leadership opportunities. They go through and do all of the planning for their booth, they do all the research, they put together posters and get all the supplies together.” Hantsch said.
This year’s Agriculture Day featured roughly 30 interactive booths, including hands-on experiences, for students to explore. Various community organizations, such as the Broome County Humane Society, the Broome County Bee Club and Farm to Schools also participated.
Select stands had livestock like bunnies, sheep, cows and horses. Other booths focused on first aid & survival, motors and had students participate in races and other activities.
The event even included a maple syrup making station, where students learned about the syrup production process, using maples tree sap on the school’s campus.
According to Chenango Forks School District, Agriculture Day provides a unique opportunity for Chenango Forks’ agriculture students to share what they have learned through their coursework, while helping younger students explore agriculture in an engaging and meaningful way.
“I think it’s amazing that the kids can come and learn about agriculture and all the leadership opportunities and experience what FAA really is. FAA is teaching leadership and growth all throughout high school, all the farming and all the activities that come with it.” said freshman Grant Wildey.
