Costco Debuts New Kirkland Energy Drink

Costco has thrown their hat into the energy drink ring with their new Kirkland Sparkling Energy Drink, which has already appeared in select locations.

At 200 mg of caffeine per 12-ounce can, the drink has drawn comparisons to Celsius, which touts the same numbers. Costco already has an energy shot, similar to 5 Hour Energy, but this is their first energy drink.

This drink could really disrupt the market due to it’s price. A case of 24 cans sells for only $16.99, which comes to about 70 cents per can. Costco not only sells it’s Kirkland brand, but many third-party brands as well. Consumers who are not loyal to other energy drinks may give this one a shot due to it’s low cost.

Costco also sells brands like Ghost, Alani, Red Bull, Celsius, and Bloom. The question with the Kirkland Sparkling Energy Drink is how it holds up taste-wise. Supplement-savvy consumers will dig into the ingredient list, but for most people it comes down to taste and energy. And since 200 mg of caffeine is the same as Ghost, Alani, and Celsius, we’ll see if the flavor can take it to the same level as those industry titans.

The balance between wholesalers like Costco and the third-party brands they carry is always interesting. How will a brand like Celsius feel when a similar product is sitting next to it on the shelf at a fraction of the cost?
