Dominion Energy says ice conditions could increase power outages

Service crews responding to thousands of power outages and potentially more across Hampton Roads.

WINDSOR, Virginia — Hampton Roads is seeing several power outages as the winter storm system brings snow, rain and ice conditions.

Dominion Energy is preparing for an increase in outages into the work week. In Windsor, near Windsor Boulevard, several traffic lights were out of operation on Sunday.

As the freezing rain chances increase across Hampton Roads, Cherise Newsome with Dominion Energy says crews are working diligently to restore these outages.

“The main concern is at this time is the ice. Not so much the snow,” said Newsome.

Earlier Sunday afternoon, 13News Now stopped by the Dominion Energy Operations Center in Norfolk.

Newsome wants people to know thousands of crews are out in the field, in full force, responding to power outages across the 757.

“Even in the Western Tidewater area, Suffolk, Windsor area, we are seeing a few thousand outages,” said Newsome.

With the snow, rain and now frigid temperatures bringing ice to several localities, that ice can stick to power lines, trees and branches, weighing them down and causing outages.

“It’s really an extensive restoration project,” Newsome emphasized.

Dominion Energy is gearing up for multiple restoration days.

“Crews may restore power,” said Newsome. “But it can happen again. So customers can experience intermittent power outages.”

Some folks could be without power for hours, up to a day, or potentially more.

“We get it. It’s so frustrating to not have power, especially when it’s cold and everyone want to keep their families warm and safe. We do ask for your patience,” said Newsome.

Officials warn icy conditions can be tricky, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“We promise our crews are out there and they will work around the clock and won’t stop until lights are back on,” said Newsome.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing a power outage, report it to the Dominion Energy App and sign up for text updates on restoration efforts.
