State Ag Secretary Mike Naig announced his plans to introduce the first Iowa Farm Act to strengthen state agriculture in the 2026 legislative session.
DES MOINES, Iowa — In efforts to strengthen Iowa agriculture in 2026, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced his plans to introduce the first Iowa Farm Act.
According to a press release, the act includes priorities raised directly by farmers, agribusinesses and stakeholders. Its intent is to provide practical, workable solutions across Iowa agriculture.
“The Iowa Farm Act is about meeting today’s challenges while preparing for the future,” Naig said.
The package will expand economic opportunities, strengthen response to animal disease threats and deliver tax relief. A breakdown of the Iowa Farm Act can be found here.
Naig is requesting a 1.6% budget increase of $1.335 million, as part of the department’s broader FY27 proposal, to maintain essential operations in animal health, food safety, consumer protection and water quality initiatives.
Several agricultural leaders praised Naig’s proposal.
“In these uncertain economic times in agriculture, we appreciate Secretary Naig’s leadership as we work to advance policies important to Iowa farmers this upcoming legislative session,” said Brent Johnson, President of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and a farmer from Manson.
Naig said he looks forward to working with the Iowa Legislature and Gov. Kim Reynolds to advance the Iowa Farm Act and financially support the essential operations of the department.
