NV Energy says it does not plan to pay back all overcharged customer money

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — NV Energy says it does not plan to pay back all the money it says it overcharged customers over the last two decades.

That number adds up to more than $65 million. The utility says it remains committed to providing meaningful money back to customers who were charged too much because of a classification error.

Dispute over refund timeline

In a filing with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, NV Energy says it wants to provide refunds to customers through 2017. Because that’s as far back as the utility has records for.

But the commission says it should issue refunds to customers impacted by as early as 2002. The commission says the utility has adequate information. NV Energy is challenging that, adding that the PUCN doesn’t have the power to order it to pay refunds.

FOX5 reached out to the PUCN for a reaction to this latest filing. They responded, saying, “The Commission generally doesn’t comment on matters pending before it.”

NV Energy previously said customers who were impacted should have been notified. But the amount they’ll receive won’t be determined until the investigation wraps up.
