In anticipation of National Ag Day on March 24, the Lake County commissioners and officials from the Lake County Farm Bureau acknowledged the regional importance of agriculture by declaring March 15-21 as National Ag Week in Lake County.
According to the board’s unanimous special resolution, “….Agriculture impacts daily living, from food and clothing to energy and building materials, underscoring its far-reaching importance across communities.”
Additionally, despite its impact, fewer Americans have a direct connection to farming, “as farm and ranch families now make up less than 2 percent of the U.S. population — yet each American farmer feeds more than 169 people,” demonstrating the modernity, efficiency and dedication of the agricultural community.
Bureau Organization Director Mandy Orahood emphasized that agriculture continues to stand as the state’s number one industry, driving economic growth, bolstering jobs and sustaining rural and urban communities alike.
“Supporting our farmers isn’t optional — it’s essential,” she said. “A strong agriculture sector means a strong, secure community, a stable food supply and a healthier future for everyone. This week, and every week, we are reminded that when we support agriculture, we support ourselves.”
The board noted that the industry encompasses more than “fields and barns,” but evolving innovation and science.
“In observance of this week, we proudly honor American agriculture and the farm and ranch families who are dedicated to providing a safe and sustainable food supply,” said Commissioner Morris Beverage III.
Commissioner John Plecnik described agriculture as “the foundation of our daily lives,” adding that the industry continues to have rich roots across Lake County communities.
“No farmers, no food,” he stated. “As we recognize National Agriculture Week, let us take a moment to acknowledge the hard work of our farmers, who fill our plates and help build our homes.”
Commissioner Morgan McIntosh echoed his colleagues.
“The vital contributions of our farming families can easily be overlooked,” he said. “For this week, let us take a moment to reflect on their ingenuity and hard work in appreciation of the role they play in our nation’s health and prosperity.”
