A natural gas plant issued an apology after a wastewater leak on Jan. 9 sullied the air of the Village of St. Bernard.
“We sincerely apologize and are actively working to reduce the odor,” Synthica Energy said in a Jan. 10 statement.
The material spilled is nonhazardous food waste, said spokesperson Pam Witmer, not sewage.
The liquid was contained within the plant, Witmer said. An inspection is underway to determine the cause.

Operations staff spotted the leak the morning of Jan. 9, she said. None of the material left the facility’s site.
Witmer said the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and a municipal sewer district have approved cleanup measures.
The plant has only recently been constructed and is not yet operational, Witmer said. It will turn excess food waste, such as expired grocery items and beer production byproducts, into natural gas.
