A viral post comparing metro travel experiences in Bengaluru and Delhi has sparked a lively debate online, with many users weighing in on affordability and commuter convenience in India’s public transport systems.
The discussion began after author Avinash Chanchal shared his experience of travelling with luggage on both metro networks. In his post on X, he highlighted a key difference that stood out to him, extra charges for carrying baggage in Bengaluru Metro.
Author calls Delhi Metro more convenient than Bengaluru Metro
Recalling his experience, Chanchal noted that he had to pay an additional Rs 30 to carry a suitcase in Bengaluru, despite the system already having relatively high fares. In contrast, he pointed out that passengers in Delhi Metro are allowed to carry luggage without any extra fee. He argued that such commuter-friendly policies are one of the reasons why Delhi Metro is often regarded as one of the best systems globally, adding that public transport cannot be both expensive and inconvenient if cities want people to rely on it.
Remember this? In Bangalore Metro, I had to pay ₹30 extra just to carry the same bag, even though it already has one of the highest fares in the country.

His post quickly went viral, triggering a wave of reactions from users offering differing perspectives on the issue.
Some users defended Bengaluru Metro, arguing that unlike Delhi, it operates with greater financial pressure and must recover its costs, which could explain additional charges. Others broadened the comparison, noting that cities like Lucknow also allow passengers to carry luggage without extra fees, while criticising Bengaluru’s planning and station placement.
However, not everyone agreed that free luggage should be the norm. A few users supported the idea of charging extra, especially during peak hours, saying large suitcases could take up valuable space in already crowded coaches.
There were also strong opinions comparing metro systems across cities. While some users praised Delhi and Chennai metros for their efficiency, others criticised Bengaluru Metro’s overall experience. A section of commenters even questioned the idea of charging for luggage altogether, calling it unnecessary and uncommon in global metro systems.
