VNG says to take steps to control your gas bill amid cold, winter weather

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — In advance of the possible winter storm, Virginia Natural Gas has some advice on how people can control their heating bills, but it advises people that their bills are directly related to their consumption.

VNG held a confhad a conference call including about 81 people from Virginia to Atlanta.  The purpose of the call, is to make sure everyone was on the same page for whatever comes our way.

As nasty freezing temperatures cost us more money in heating bills, Anne Russell felling that pain with plunging temperatures,

“I’m going to probably get more blankets.  Maybe use our  natural gas fireplace for all that.”

Over at Virginia Natural Gas’ South Side Corporate HQ, 10 On Your Side found Rus Hayslett, vice president of operations, who said that “cold weather for us doesn’t mean anything for pricing. First of all, we pass the pricing that we get on to you, and that is marketed and hedged months in advance in preparation for the winter season.”

Hayslett said the bills are higher because it’s colder and you are using more natural gas.

“December 2025 was the coldest December since December 2010 — 15 years — so just because it’s cold this weekend doesn’t mean your bill is going to be higher because gas costs more. It’s directly related to what your consumption of gas is.”

Hayslett said one thing you can do is go the VNG website and follow tips on how to lower your gas bill.

“You can take steps to control you own gas usage as well as energy efficiency, sealing your windows and doors, things like that, to cut down on your usage,” Hayslett said.

Said Anne Russell: “I am concerned because our bill has really been going up in the last couple months and I don’t feel like we’re using a lot more. It’s just like it is out of control.”
