Quant funds, market makers and the retail crowd are helping to push stocks higher: Liquidnet

Jeffrey O’Connor, U.S. head of equity market structure at dark-pool operator Liquidnet, says quant funds, market makers and the retail crowd have been driving much of the inflows into stocks lately, while institutional funds have remained more cautious.
“While institutional asset managers have remained cautious, we have seen significant volumes driven by quant funds and market makers – not just in lit equity markets, but also ETFs and in dark pools,” O’Connor said in commentary shared via email.
“We are also seeing some of the most consistently high retail participation at up to 20% of overall daily volumes, with individual investors buoyed by gains from buying the dip following the Trump administration’s first tariff announcement.”
