Private Equity News has selected 14 leaders that feature in Financial News’ inaugural sustainable finance list of 50 leaders in finance.
Amid a debate over the merits of the ESG label and the financial sector’s role in tackling climate change, the issue has become surrounded in controversy. HSBC Asset Management’s responsible investment head Stuart Kirk was suspended after suggesting investors shouldn’t worry about environmental issues. And a raid on asset manager DWS over greenwashing allegations led to the resignation of the Deutsche Bank unit’s boss. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and Peter Thiel have also criticised the ESG sector.
Still, the financial services industry has spent time — as well as billions of dollars — on sustainability hiring and strategy. It is a sign that ESG isn’t going away any time soon. That’s why FN decided now is the time to celebrate the people driving change at their firms and the wider industry.
When compiling this list, FN’s editorial team focused on those with a proven track record in sustainability, with one or two exceptions where individuals have a big enough profile to exert influence in their roles despite being a new entrant to this growing corner of financial services.
Profiles by: James Booth, Paul Clarke, Peter Davy, Clare Dickinson, Sebastian McCarthy, David Ricketts, Bérengère Sim and Penny Sukhraj.
