Brazilian Study Sheds Light on Greenhouse Gas Sequestration on Coffee Farms
A study carried out by Brazil-based NGO the Institute of Forest and Agricultural Management and Certification (Imaflora) found that coffee plantations may sequester more carbon emissions than they emit when practices such as organic fertilizer are used. The study involved 20 farms associated with the Cerrado Coffee Growers’ Cooperative (Expocacer).
ICE Report Says Futures Trading Spiked Upward in 2023
As first reported by Reuters, a report from the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) found that futures trading of sugar, cocoa and coffee on the commodities market all jumped upward in 2023 as companies sought to manage supply chain risks. The daily volume of traded contracts for coffee rose 9% in 2023 compared to the year prior, the report stated.
International Coffee Organization Releases December Market Report
The International Coffee Organization (ICO) released its latest monthly global coffee market report. The group’s composite indicator price for green coffee averaged $1.757 per pound in December, an 8.8% increase from November. Here’s the full report.
Starbucks Allows Reusable Cups for Drive-Through/App Orders
Starbucks, a global leader in the creation of single-use cup waste, has hailed itself as a champion of cup waste “reduction.” The company said it is now allowing customers in the United States and Canada to use their personal reusable cups when ordering through drive-throughs and/or the mobile app.
Korean Researchers Launch Certified Reference Material (CRM) for Coffee
A new study from researchers in Korea outline the process of creating what they describe as the first “certified reference material,” or CRM, for coffee. CRMs are measurement standards used by laboratories for a number of purposes, including quality control and validation.
ICBS 2024 Returns to Kuala Lumpur May 23-25
The International Café & Beverage Show (ICBS) is returning to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia on May 23-25, 2024. Organizers say they have secured more event space this year, while anticipating more than 160 exhibitors throughout the coffee and beverage industries.
Oatly and CBTL Bring Oat Milk to 180+ US Stores
Oat milk giant Oatly has inked a deal with coffee chain Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf that brings Oatly’s Barista Edition product to more than 180 CBTL locations in the United States. To mark the occasion, CBTL has rolled out a “Vanilla Spiced Oat Latte.”
Chamberlain Coffee Launches Canned Oat Milk Lattes
Celebrity-backed coffee brand Chamberlain Coffee has launched canned RTD oat milk lattes. The company, led in part by social influencer Emma Chamberlain, is bringing its “vibrant” and “fun-hearted” products to Walmart nationwide, according to a press release.
Police Investigating Break-In at Maine’s Coffee By Design
Local police are investigating a break-in and theft at a location of Maine-based specialty coffee roasting company Coffee By Design. The shop’s owner told the local CBS affiliate that someone threw a brick to break in.
Coffee Masters London Applications Closing Jan. 14
Applications for the Coffee Masters barista skills competition in the UK close Saturday, Jan. 14. The fast-paced competition accompanies the annual London Coffee Festival, which takes place at the Truman Brewery in London on April 11-14.
