HENDERSON, Ky. (WEVV) — Henderson Municipal Gas (HMG) has announced plans to expand its natural gas infrastructure into western Henderson County, bringing service to the communities of Geneva and Smith Mills as part of a multi-phase project.
The Geneva & Smith Mills Expansion project represents a significant investment in the region’s utility network, aimed at providing residents and businesses with access to reliable and cost-effective natural gas.
Phase 1 of the project will include the installation of approximately 3.1 miles of 4-inch polyethylene natural gas main along Kentucky Highway 136 West. The new line will extend through Geneva and continue west toward Smith Mills. Construction is expected to begin around May 1 and be completed by the end of summer 2026. According to HMG, Phase 1 is fully funded.
Officials said the expansion will offer a more efficient and dependable energy option for homeowners, businesses, churches, and other facilities in the area. Natural gas service is expected to provide a lower-cost alternative to electric and propane systems while also strengthening the region’s overall utility infrastructure.
“This is about providing our neighbors in Western Henderson County with better choices and more reliable energy,” said Tim Clayton, gas system director for HMG. “By expanding our footprint, we are making Henderson a more affordable place to live.”
HMG is also working to secure funding and partnerships for Phase 2 of the project, which would extend the gas main an additional two miles directly into the town of Smith Mills.
To begin construction on Phase 1, HMG has recommended awarding the contract to Swartz Pipeline Contracting of Olympia, Kentucky. The company was the lowest bidder among four submissions. Swartz Pipeline previously completed the 5-mile Pratt Pipeline project for HMG in 2023, finishing on time.
Officials cited the contractor’s proven track record as a key factor in the decision, noting that the project will be carried out with a focus on safety and efficiency. The gas line will be installed within the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet right-of-way along KY Highway 136 West.
HMG leaders say the expansion is expected to not only benefit residents with improved energy access but also generate additional revenue to support the utility’s long-term operations.
