
A construction crew reportedly struck a natural gas line in Suffolk on Wednesday afternoon, prompting evacuations and road closures. Crews are on-site for repairs.
Emergency crews responded Wednesday afternoon to a natural gas leak in the 300 block of West Washington Street in Suffolk, according to city officials.
Suffolk Fire & Rescue, police, and public works were called to the area around 1 p.m. after a construction crew reportedly struck a natural gas line during excavation work.
Officials said crews arrived around 1:05 p.m. and began evacuating the area, including a nearby library and surrounding homes.
Virginia Natural Gas was contacted and responded to the scene. A repair crew is en route.
West Washington Street is closed from Wellons Street to Saratoga Street. South Street and Lee Street are also shut down as a precaution.
No injuries have been reported.
