SHELDON, Iowa (KTIV) — Students at East Elementary traded their desks for dirt Thursday as a mobile agriculture classroom rolled into town.
The Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation brought its Seed Survivor Mobile Classroom, a 36-foot interactive classroom on wheels, to the school. Students rotated through stations covering plant science, virtual reality games and lessons connecting agriculture to everyday life. Each student planted a sunflower to take home.
“There’s not as many kids as you would think that have those experiences of being on the farm and being around agriculture,” said Danielle Nasers, a fourth-grade teacher. “So, this has been a really good opportunity for all of our students to learn what is going on in our area, this is what our area produces not only for our state, but the country and our whole world.”
The mobile classroom is wrapping up a tour of 45 schools across 13 Iowa counties. The journey started in February. This week, it is visiting schools in O’Brien and Sioux counties.
“We go to different schools throughout Iowa, and we talk to kids about agriculture,” said Marin Gaul, an educational presenter for the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation.
Iowa is one of only three states selected for the program this year. It is funded in part by agriculture industry leader Nutrien.
Nasers said the program aims to show students agriculture extends beyond traditional farming.
“I hope kids learn that agriculture is not just the crops we see and the animals,” Nasers said. “I also want them to see the future occupations they can take from this. There are different careers in agriculture beyond what we normally think.”
