Hedge fund Balyasny has hired Francine Fang as its global head of systematic investing in a boost to its quantitative trading business.

Fang was previously deputy head of investments at Point72’s Cubist Systematic, working at the rival hedge fund for eight years.

Based in New York, Fang will be responsible for the growth of Balyasny’s systematic strategies. She will work closely with the firm’s investment teams, the company said in a 22 February announcement.

Fang started her career with UBS in 1997 and worked at the bank for 12 years before joining JPMorgan in 2009 as head of the firm’s liquidity provision group in equities.

Fang’s appointment comes as Balyasny expands its portfolio management and quant teams. The hedge fund has hired several portfolio managers and quant strategists since the start of the year.

Salim Choueiki, a former ETF trader at Citadel Securities, joined Balyasny as a portfolio manager in February. The same month, Onex Credit’s chief investment officer Peter Zaltz joined Balyasny as a portfolio manager.

The hedge fund hired Deutsche Bank’s Yanjun Chen as a quant researcher in January, and Gleacher Shacklock’s Joe Qureshi as an associate in February.

The hedge fund is planning to boost its quant business by hiring of researchers and developers in its New York office, according to its LinkedIn page.

Earlier this year, Balyasny portfolio manager Jeff Russel left the hedge fund to join London-based Eisler Capital as head of the firm’s fundamental equity long-short business.
